The Problem
If you knocked on a neighbors door 50 years ago, they might invite you in, ask if you want some cake or tea, ask how your day has been.. But if you knocked on someone's door today, you might see a gun.
We believe the culprit for this is social media, people today would rather look at someone's profile feed, who might not even live near them, rather than knock on their neighbors door.
This is because there is a slight social anxiety when you meet a person face to face. Where as if you look at their feed through a mobile device, you “seem” to get the best of both worlds, you don’t have the social anxiety, and you also get to “see” the other person. But this is a false positive, it’s not real, you’re not “being social”.
What has happened is, because people are so used to visiting “social profiles”, they don’t bother to knock on their neighbors door. Hence when a neighbor does knock, it’s suspicious.. And this is a sad state of the world today. It’s a deterioration of communities, it’s a deterioration of the natural social fabric that God designed, and currently exists in heaven. I know that Jesus is not happy with this, He likes communities, He likes it when people are social and spend time together in families and communities and are connected across groups.
Solution?
Before we do that, it’s important to consider the system that led to this “social media” that is in reality anti-social.
In short, it’s because all of these “social media” companies are based on ad-revenue. And if you consider what this means, is says that these companies measure success for their apps based on how much they can keep a user on the app, looking at ad’s, because the more they look, the more ad-revenue. And hence as a company you would be incentivized to create features that would try to satisfy that success criteria. But then if you changed this success criteria, and you said instead “how much can we keep people off their phones, interacting with each other offline”? Then you would try to create functionality that would try to satisfy a different goal.
4 Neighbors features maximizes this different goal, and measures it by; (# of users)*(# of hours of hangout)*(average hangout rating).
We also monetize via subscription service, which is a very viable alternative business model with proven track records by social apps like Meetup.
Why the name? Family Guy has 4 neighbors, there are 4 Ninja Turtles, the Fantastic 4, and there are 4 corners on a block. You don’t need hundreds of neighbors to relax with a few!
